EXHAUSTIVE TRAVEL GUIDE TO ROUTE 66
Think back to the last cross country trip you've driven. Remember when an unexpected fork in the road sent you miles off your intended path? Now just think how time consuming and aggravating it would be if you were traveling by bicycle.
In commemoration of the 66th anniversary of old U.S. Route 66 on November 11, 1992, the BICYCLE GUIDE FOR ROUTE 66 was produced and is now available.
The author and avid cyclist himself, Dan Mahnke, traveled the entire route from the Pacific Ocean to Lake Michigan several times. He lists in this book exact mileage's between all optional intersections on the entire route, primarily the ORIGINAL route from the 1920's. Even though the government has posted many "HISTORICAL ROUTE 66" signs along the entire route, apparently it never occurred to them to post turn signs at ALL intersections. When the route turns and connects to a different local road, the traveler must either be clairvoyant or have a copy of this travel guide!
Some stretches of old Rt. 66 don't exist anymore. Buried beneath a newer Interstate Highway, or in places, just barricaded off and abandoned when a newer alternative was constructed nearby. Such breaks are noted and alternative paths nearby are given that keep the traveler as close as possible to the original route. At least a couple of neighborhoods that Rt. 66 passes through are not conducive to bicycle travel, to put it tactfully. A traveler might prefer a Brink's truck or Sherman tank to feel safe. These danger spots and a few other "impossible to navigate" areas are also noted.
Anyone seeking to retravel this historic Los Angeles to Chicago path, either way, and enjoy what old fashion splendor and atmosphere that still remains, could benefit by utilizing this exhaustive guide. Maps not included.
100 photographs of sites along the way also decorate the guide. These photos were taken by Dan, an amateur and semi professional photographer, and cyclist for more than 25 years.
